On Saturday, October 13, over 80 dedicated volunteers combined their efforts to help restore Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion, some of Berkeley County’s finest assets, to their once pristine beauty.  The Lake’s provide our residents with numerous recreation opportunities including swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, and even camping on some of the islands.  However, they are also a valuable resource in that they provide the water we use in our daily lives.

Not content to just lounge around the beach? You might want to try ocean kayaking! Sometimes called sea kayaking, it is the sport of paddling on open waters using kayaks, which are small boats propelled by paddlers using double-bladed paddles. Kayaks typically have a covered deck and a spraydeck that covers the cockpit to prevent paddlers from inclement weather or in the case of whitewater kayaking, to prevent water from entering the boat. A spraydeck also allows one or more passengers to sit on the boat and steer it by paddling or rowing. Kayaks resemble canoes, and in fact are called such in Ireland and Great Britain.
