Canoe Motor Mount Basics - What You Need to Know About a Canoe Motor Mount

By Ilse Hagen

A canoe motor mount is a device used in securing canoe motors. It is usually installed on a canoe's port or starboard side and made of durable wood or metal, fitting a wide range of motor sizes. Some may even be clamped to a canoe's gunwales and used for electric motors.

  • Kinds
A canoe motor mount usually comes in two kinds: aluminum and wooden. Aluminum motor mounts are made of heavy-duty aluminum. They are the types of motor mounts that are installed on either the starboard or port sides of a canoe and used to secure motors that have up to 4 horsepower ratings by utilizing a clamping mechanism. Aluminum motor mounts are best for gas and electric motors and will fit most canoe brands. Wooden motor mounts, on the other hand, are normally made of ash wood, and are best used for electric motors of up to 4 horsepower ratings. While most of their parts are wooden, they also have stainless steel parts as well as phenolic knobs used to clamp the mount to a canoe's gunwales.

  • Buying tips
Looking to buy a canoe motor mount? If you are, make sure that you know your canoe's motor size, your canoe's gunwale, starboard or port, before you go out and get one to ensure that it'll fit. In most cases, your motor mount will have to be ordered so you need these. After you get your motor mount, make sure that you secure your motor properly. Check that all clamps are tight so as to prevent accidents. As for the kind of motor mount, both kinds will work well in most conditions. It only boils down to what your personal preferences are.
