Floation
I guess this might be more of a canoe question. Do you use floation in your boat all the time or some of the time. I use it once in awhile
mostly in moving water.  On flat water I don't use them.

Re: Floation
Well, I'm going to give the official response: you should always wear a PFD. They are much more comfortable now-a-days.

Re: Floation
I think you should always wear one. Even out on flat water, if it happens to be a big lake or such, you might not realize how tired you are until you flip and have to keep yourself afloat. Plus with the PFD on you can focus more attention on righting your boat (if it does turn all the way over) instead of having to worry about keeping your head above the water.

Re: Floation
Oops. What I ment was supplemental flotaion for your canoe or kayak. I always wear my PFD.

Re: Floation

If I consistently paddled cl III (or, shudder, higher), I would bag the canoe.  Usually I encounter little more than low cl II, and since the canoe is generally full of gear, there isn't much space left for water.  Most of my paddling is moving to swift water, with the occassional cl I.

As far as wearing a PDF,  ALWAYS!!!  I even wear it on the acre pond at the farm.  It's a positive example for my grandkids.  In fact, I just ordered a new Stohlquist eSCAPE this afternoon.  I know it's the economy model, but it has to be at least as good as the Stearns that has serviced me so well for more years than one should trust any PFD. If I was really cheap, I'd have gotten the cheap orange yokes @ _ _ _ _ mart.

(BTW, has anyone figured out by now that I like smiley faces?)

Better to be up the creek without a paddle than to not be on the creek at all.
