Shark "Attacks" Kayaker in California

This happened close to home...

Woman Has Close Encounter With Shark Off Catalina

LOS ANGELES A woman kayaking off the Catalina isthmus had a close encounter with a shark this weekend, according to a broadcast report.

Bettina Pereira was in an area she has frequented for years when a shark bumped her kayak, KCAL9 reported.

"My first thought was, "Wow, was that a whale?"' Pereira told KCAL.

"I couldn't believe it and all of a sudden when I seen the fin I realized this is not a whale -- this is a shark. By the time I thought that ... the shark was already cruising under me and lifting the kayak up with its body, and I landed out of the kayak right onto the shark's body."

Pereira's son told her husband a shark was attacking her, but the shark swam away and Pereira started swimming toward the shore, KCAL9 reported.

Two men in a boat pulled up and helped her to the shore.

Experts think Mr. Great White was only investigating. It's starting out to be a big season for sharks around here!

Investigating?? for what? what was on the menu! That might unnerve this yearling kayaker if it happened to me! The biggest thing I have seen while out in the water is a manatee - and they are only dangerous if you're a plant. Be safe, Lattitude!

Re: Shark "Attacks" Kayaker in California
This incident happened on the windward side of Santa Catalina Island which is approx 25 nm offshore from So CA.  What is surprising really is that an attack like this hasn't been reported previously.  That area is very rich in marine life which makes it a paradise for fishing, diving, sailing, and yakking.  Great whites have always been around the area but most of the time stay farther out.  This time of year is prime for Grunnion which spawn on shore so that drives fish up the food chain including Great whites closer.   It's definitely a balance around here.  Sharks are known for investigating by bumping into objects to see if they might make for a good meal.  Read one account of this incident that said there were teeth marks on the kayak.

The ocean environment here has rebounded well and with that comes a level respect that each of us users must bring.  You paddle with big fishes in big water you have to know, prepare for and accept the risk.  Near shore I've seen shark, skates, dolphin, sea lions and seals.  Sea lions are the worst.  You get too close and they will charge.  A little further out, 500 yards and beyond and you're paddling with whales and other big critters.
Pardon the pun but I'd be a fish out of water in another environment.  Probably be looking over my shoulder all the time watching for Water Mocs or spiders.
